Life-long
artist and weaver for more than a decade, Russell Howard
has made integrating the inner work of self-discovery
and the magic of our environment his expression.
“Designing
fabric challenges the way I think about the world.
I continually question why our world looks the way
it does, how things work and how we find the choices
that we create for ourselves. Through designing fabrics
I observe structure, logic and reasoning. Woven fabric
has calculated interlacements, measurable properties
and tactile results.”

Howard received formal training in textile art,
earning a B.A.
in Fine Art / Fiber Art.
Now as a designer of handwoven fabrics, Russell finds a deeper
relationship with his work.
“The
time I spend at the loom, weaving, is largely an internal
experience. For me, art is a process of being internally
still, present and continually returning to the moment.
This is the time that I feel the choices I have made
in the design. And even though calculated, I am always
surprised, to rediscover my choices.”

Howard uses weaving to connect to a larger community.
He creates handwoven works of art, which becomes part
of people’s daily lives.
“There
is another reason I create hand woven cloth: When the
fabric is turned into artwear and sent into the world
to be worn, a new experience is created; an experience
that belongs not only to the wearer but to all who
see it. Knowing that my work becomes part of our community
brings me great satisfaction.”
