Our Design and Weaving Studio
Located
in the heart of New England is our boutique weaving
studio dedicated to making the finest hand woven fabrics
available.
Giving
attention to every detail of the process insures that
this artwear is the best that hands can make.
Up
to five separate processes are used in the creation of
the fabrics that come from the studio of Russell Howard
Designs. Together these processes involve dozens of individual
steps.
• • •
WEAVING
Our designs begin with carefully selected natural fibers. The
blends of fibers and yarns are selected for their unique
texture, strength and luster. Rayon, Cotton, Chenille, and
Wool are among the fiber blends you will find in our handwoven
products.
The
fibers are then rhythmical woven using a modern
handloom equipped with state of the art technology.

SHIBORI DYED
Shibori is the ancient Japanese technique of resist dyeing.
By preventing areas of fabric from receiving dye while dyeing
other areas result in unique designs that characterize Russell
Howard Designs. The rich colors of our dyes
are non-toxic, wash-fast and made to last. While the mixes are
precisely measured and the techniques are consistent, the process
of dyeing always offers delightful surprises and makes each work
of art truly unique.

SURFACE DESIGN
Surface design refers to the process of embellishing the surface
of fabric. We hand paint designs with non-toxic blends of opaque
and metallic pigments. Painting offers crisp clear lines that
contrast the flowing lines of dye. And, just as the paint looks
bold and direct, so is the process of painting on fabric.
